About Us

“Girls deserve a tailored approach to cricket.”

Global Girls Cricket Club – Built for Girls By Girls

Cricket has long been known as the gentleman’s game, but we know that term doesn’t even begin to describe our beautiful diverse cricket community.

We exist to celebrate the fact that cricket is equally as much female. In fact, we’ve been playing just as long as the men, with the first recorded female match played as early as 1745.

We also know that cricket isn’t only for the posh and privileged.

It’s a game for everyone, of any age and any background.

The Girls Cricket Club is a place for female cricketers, built by girls, for girls, to share knowledge, resources, inspiration and opportunities.

It’s a supportive and welcoming environment for girls to feel a sense of belonging within cricket and where we can serve as a independent voice for females within the game.

Founded by England cricket legend Lydia Greenway, the Girls Cricket Club is about creating opportunities for development both on and off the field and providing resources specific to girls and women to support them on their sporting journey.

Over an elite career spanning 13 years, Lydia earned 225 caps for England, winning two World Cups and five Ashes Series. She was also named England’s Player of the Year and shortlisted for the ICC World Player of the Year. While Lydia was lucky to have her dad and brother encourage her into the sport, she understands that not all girls have those opportunities early on. The Girls Cricket Club aims to reach girls who may not otherwise be exposed to cricket and to provide them with equal opportunities to play the game.

We also focus on facilitating teachers development through our Teacher CPD courses and Online Resource. All content has been designed and written by our Founder and Head Coach, Lydia Greenway.

We deliver taster sessions, masterclasses, school sports awards and Day Camps in schools and clubs to ensure pupils continue to have the opportunity to be coached by high quality coaches within and outside of school.  Contact us to find out more or to arrange a visit from Cricket for Girls.

Who is Lydia Greenway?

Lydia Greenway represented England 225 times across all formats of the game during a career spanning over 13 years! She has helped England win two World Cups and five Ashes Series as well as being England’s Player of the Year and shortlisted for ICC World Player of the Year. Lydia has been coaching since she was 17 years old – working from grassroots level to working with some of the best players in the world.

When Lydia was younger, she was lucky enough to have a dad and brother who both played, allowing her the opportunity to get involved herself:

“Looking back, if it wasn’t for my family, I may not have played cricket. My Dad was my role model because I didn’t know there was an England Women’s team and cricket wasn’t really a sport played by girls in school. Schools and clubs now have a fantastic opportunity to create a high quality and inspiring girls cricket programme. Girls cricket in schools has a blank canvas and my aim with Cricket for Girls is to ensure there is expertise in girls cricket within every school and club in the country and further afield.”

Platform for progression

The Girls Cricket Club is designed to complement the existing development pathway for girls in  cricket. It provides opportunities outside of the traditional pathway to train under the tutelage of world-class coaches, but away from the pressures often associated with talent ID and age group programmes. The Girls Cricket Club is a non-judgemental, supportive environment to learn, make mistakes and challenge yourself without worrying about selectors and your performance.

Our club ethos is built on progression not perfection.

Connecting Global Community

For many of us, cricket is not only where we go to play sport, but it’s where we meet like minded people and make some of our closest friends. The power of the cricket community is a special thing, but sometimes the female voice can be lost. We want to connect and unite female cricket players all over the world as we believe we are much stronger together. The Girls Cricket Club is a community of strong female cricketers who back each other and celebrate female success. We want to join the dots for female cricketers, open doors within our community and democratise access to resources and information available at the highest level so we can all get the most out of the game we love.

Developing People and Providing Opportunity

Sport is about so much more than what happens out on the field. It’s where we learn some of life’s greatest lessons and it makes us into the people we are. At the Girls Cricket Club we recognise the power of cricket to develop people both on and off the field and that’s why we take a holistic approach to coaching. The Girls Cricket Club is designed to empower girls to play their best game and live their best life, with expert coaching from those who understand that girls are different to boys and deserve a tailored approach. For too long women’s sport has followed a cookie-cutter approach where girls are coached the same as boys, regardless of our physiological differences. Our coaches get it. They’ve been in your shoes before and they’re equipped to give you all of the tools to succeed as not only sportswomen, but in all areas of life. We’ve tracked down experts on female-specific topics including nutrition, mental wellbeing, leadership, communication, injury prevention, strength & conditioning, sports psychology and more to give you the perfect launching pad.

Lydia Greenway

“We all remember our best coaches, and as coaches, we have a huge opportunity to affect peoples’ lives positively. I am a big believer that young girls should have access to genuine female role models when it comes to sport, more specifically cricket…”

Being part of the 2017 World Cup winning squad.

YOUR COACHING EXPERIENCE TO DATE
I spent the winter as the junior fast bowling coach at North Hobart Cricket Club, Tasmania.

Beth Morgan

Another Ashes winner in 2008 and part of England’s Women’s World Cup winning squad of 2009.

HIGH POINT IN YOUR PLAYING CAREER
Winning two world cups in 2009 with England and getting the opportunity to play alongside so many world class players.

YOUR COACHING EXPERIENCE TO DATE AND/OR PHILOSOPHY
My coaching philosophy is taken very much from my playing experience – to help create an environment where players can build confidence and explore and enjoy the game to bring the best out of themselves.

Ella Chandler

Part of the hugely successful Hampshire squad, Ella is one of the youngest players in the set-up. A top-order batsman and off-spin bowler she made an instant impact, making 56 on debut against Leicestershire aged just 15.

HIGH POINT IN YOUR PLAYING CAREER

YOUR COACHING EXPERIENCE TO DATE AND/OR PHILOSOPHY
I have worked with boys and girls of mixed abilities and ages. I focus sessions around the individual players and their specific needs. Most notably I have coached players in the Rwandan National team and will be returning later this Autumn to the country again.

Emma Whiteman

Emma is ladies’ captain at club side Totteridge Millhillians and a top-order player.

HIGH POINT IN YOUR PLAYING CAREER
“I think my high point in my playing career was my first half century and not out (which was the same innings). As an opener in the T20 format, I haven’t often finished not out. But the feeling of sticking to a plan, scoring big and contributing to my team winning the match (and league) was really special.”

YOUR COACHING EXPERIENCE TO DATE AND/OR PHILOSOPHY
“Coaching philosophy is very much enjoyment of the game and the spirit of cricket. I want people to really love being involved in cricket. If you truly love the game, you’ll want to stick with the drills in order to get better. A bad coach is the quickest way to be put off a game. Trying to inject my love of cricket into my coaching style and delivery is paramount to me. If I’m enjoying delivering the session, chances are that you’ll be enjoying it too.”

Evelyn Jones

Captain of Lancashire Women’s team and member of the Lancashire Thunder Kia Super League side.

HIGH POINT IN YOUR PLAYING CAREER

An average of 22 with the ball has helped Kent to continue to dominate Women’s cricket in England, and she is still going strong in 2021.
